Continuous improvement is at the heart of what we do. We’ve detailed our progress in Toyota Australia’s 16th Sustainability Report, designed to deliver more transparency about our sustainability efforts as we work toward carbon neutrality by 2050.

Environmental sustainability

We’re working to reduce carbon emissions through the development of low to zero-emissions vehicles and by improving end-of-life processes. We strive to minimise the negative environmental impact of our operations through renewable energy and tree-planting initiatives that improve the ecosystems within our local communities.

Recent funding

In FY22, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency awarded Toyota Australia approximately $1.5M in government funding for our ongoing work with the Toyota Hydrogen Centre.

Solar energy

We’ve added 7,883 solar panels to our Altona Toyota Parts Centre warehouse which now produces 2.5MW – enough to power the equivalent of 500 houses. We’re working with our Dealership Network to transition to solar, with 39 Dealers already proposing uptake as of June 2022.

Battery recycling

We’re developing strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle vehicle batteries locally. In FY 2022, we incentivised Toyota and Lexus customers to recycle 1,954 hybrid batteries, helping to combat resource depletion and minimise waste.

Case Study

The all-electric Lexus UX 300e

In November 2021, Toyota Motor Corporation Australia launched the Lexus UX 300e – its first BEV with a carbon-neutral marketing campaign certified by Climate Active.

In its first four months, we sold 72 out of 78 units (we were unable to meet our target due to short-term supply shortages). A further 143 units were placed on order, demonstrating demand for diversified electrified powertrains in Australia. We closed out FY22 with 71 orders for the Lexus UX 300e awaiting fulfillment.

Toyota Australia remains committed to the development of a risk-free BEV ecosystem with improved ease of servicing and charging, as well as more mobility options for early adopters.

Through fundraising, education, road safety and grassroots activities, we support people and communities to grow and thrive.

Sharing skills and knowledge

We help solve community challenges by sharing our Toyota Production System (TPS) knowledge with not-for-profits and social enterprises like Teach for Australia and Ability Works Australia.

Providing financial support

In pursuit of our target to distribute 1% of pre-tax profits, we donated $3.4M to community partners working in environment and sustainability, traffic safety, education and social justice (FY 2021).

Growing future leaders

Through our apprenticeship programs, training and grants, we’re helping young Australians pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), encouraging a sense of purpose and pride.

Case Study

Upskilling the talent of tomorrow

We supported the development and rollout of the In2Science Mentor Leaders Program, an initiative preparing STEM professionals to support secondary students with their career prospects.

Following the program, 100% of mentors reported feeling more equipped to coach others, with improvements to skills including time management, communication, active listening and creative problem solving.

Through the development of In2Science mentors, Toyota Australia aims to have a positive impact on the STEM aspirations of participating students.

Flexible shared transport

KINTO is supporting the shift from personal vehicle ownership to car sharing and car rental. From its initial launch to the end of FY22, we took KINTO usership from 500 to 3,232 members and growing.

Alternative energies

We’ve shifted our business model to reduce environmental impact, developing lower carbon mobility options including electric, hybrid electric and hydrogen, a zero emissions technology that produces only water from its usage.

Smarter and safer roads

We partner with industry and government organisations to develop cohesive infrastructure for safer, more connected and efficient road networks.

Case Study

Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS)

We deliver value for Australians through the development of progressive design and technology, working to innovate safer, more connected and efficient road networks.

We’re at the forefront when it comes to Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS), a type of technology that enables the cooperation of two or more intelligent transport ‘sub-systems’. For example, real-time information from roadside units providing connected vehicles with advance warning about road hazards.

We collaborate with state governments on safety research and technology trials, and find ways to help drivers by decreasing human error, reducing carbon emissions and improving road network efficiency.

Our alignment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), agreed by 193 countries in 2015, set out key challenges for the global community to address in the decade ahead. We’ve identified priority SDGs where we can have the greatest impact through our business strategy and actions, and are currently developing indicators to measure and track our progress.
